Planting Design 6 - Comberton

Design Rationale

Comberton

The planting in this garden had become tired and many of the plants had been out competed by a few specific varieties and some strong persistent and competitive weeds!

I have created a border to withstand the windy, sunny and exposed aspect and provide colour and interest all year round. The grasses in the design help to bring the landscape into the garden by reflecting the surrounding scene.

The client also wanted planting that would require less maintenance than the full herbaceous border that they had previously. Whilst there are some herbaceous perennials, there are also some hardy flowering shrubs.

The design is in repetitive blocks, with mixes of planting in each block. A mixture of evergreen, semi-evergreen and some herbaceous will provide structure through the winter months.

Bulbs will be planted throughout the planting with early colour coming from Crocus tommasinianus in February and carrying on through to Agapanthus in September. Prunus incisa ‘Kojo-no-mai’ provides blossom in early spring plus there will be some gorgeous autumnal leaf colour coming from both the Prunus and Euonymus alatus ‘Compactus’. Mixtures of textures along with grasses will provide a wispier, softness to the border.
